Medical Yoga Trauma and lifeburdens
Humans can be exposed to various violent life events such as accidents, natural disasters, abuse and more. How such events affect a person will vary. But when does a psychological strain become a trauma? And what is a trauma reaction? In a violent event experienced by two people, one may develop a trauma and the other not. The reason for this is related to vulnerability factors.
An event rarely triggers the same reactions in affected people. What may be a crisis for one person may be a trauma for another. Some people show no immediate reactions at all. At times, a large proportion of those who experience an event will develop traumatic symptoms afterwards, while at other times they may express
risk factors together with the event contribute to the development of trauma. This complexity emphasizes the importance of helpers having a thorough and nuanced understanding of both the current state of knowledge in the field and the terms used.
We at Medical Yoga Yoga Norway want to focus on the underlying challenges instead of a one-pointed focus on just the diagnosis. Because with a focus only on the diagnosis, we are concerned that this in itself can become identity-creating, limiting and can lead to a feeling of outsiderness. Therefore, our mantra to those who have received a diagnosis or are living with a trauma; "you have a diagnosis/trauma - but you are not your diagnosis/trauma." We think that it mobilizes resources in each individual and gives hope.
This module therefore has a resource-oriented approach to trauma, diagnoses and life burdens, where we are concerned with the individual and how they can meet and support themselves despite what they live in or with.
Anette Haugnæss has for many years worked with young people and adults with trauma and diagnoses. All this time she missed giving them concrete techniques to be able to support themselves when uneasiness arose. It's all about an experience of standing firm in yourself, even if it's "storming".
