Why Medical Yoga for Seniors?

Medical Yoga for Seniors is a certification program that can help optimize older people's inner capacity and resilience even as aging gradually reduces their capacity.

The knowledge and yoga programs introduced in this certification program can help prevent and improve conditions related to;

  • Motion

  • Cognitive capacity (memory)

  • Low spirits

  • Nutrition

Strengthening these areas is important for a good level of function, and to prevent or delay loss of function. A study in which 135 pensioners participated showed that yoga clearly improved the quality of life of those who practiced it for six months. (ref.https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17544857/)

Medical Yoga can act as a good supplement to other necessary treatment, and in addition have a positive effect on;

  • Reduction of stress and anxiety

Over a few years, Anette has offered yoga at Storefjell, where 450 pensioners gather annually. Chair yoga has been very popular here, as it is available to everyone regardless of functional level. In addition, both Anette and Marianne offer chair yoga for associations and at various events to strengthen public health. They now want to offer this education to others who meet seniors in their everyday life, so that even more seniors can enjoy chair yoga, where they have their meeting points and live. Activity is an important part of elderly care, and by being certified in Medical Yoga on a chair, you get an opportunity to organize groups for seniors as another alternative to activity. We have both experienced how creating activity groups where you do yoga together has contributed to an experience of community for seniors. For many, this one meeting point during the week is particularly important to prevent loneliness.
